Who we are

THE BEGINNING: “What if we started our own church?”  That was a question that popped up a dinner party a year and a half ago.  It was something that never occurred to us.  But when the idea came, it was like Christ said it.  We LOVED the concept, and its potential for spiritual growth in the community.  This little band of spiritual thinkers and seekers from Jamaica Plain has been growing ever since. We’ve been putting God first in our lives, and the blessings keep on coming.

WHAT WE’RE ABOUT: We’re into looking at things from God’s point of view.  That’s what Christian Science is all about.  We believe God is love, and that that Love is the order and harmony that pervades the universe.  Through readings, fellowship, sharing experiences, and a family-like care for each other, we encourage individuals to break from limited thinking and living.   We believe that heaven is not a far off thing–it’s within us and all around us.  And, our little church proves that all the time.  Our readings and experiences demonstrate the possibility and practicality of God being stronger and more influential than materiality, which seems to be the god of our time.  We’ve found that starting with the real God–Love, Life and Truth itself– is the only solution for lasting joy and health.

We like Christ Jesus.  We’re into what he taught.  We think about him as the most clear example of Christ (God’s idea) that ever lived.  We strive to understand and put into practice his profound teachings on compassion, non-judgement, healing prayer, and the true nature of heaven and earth.   As a church, we’re all about helping ever other and our community learn how to express Christ-qualities in our own lives.  Healing for the world starts with healing each other.

CHURCH FOUNDATION: Our church is founded on principles taught by Christ Jesus and demystified by the great 19th Century thinker, Mary Baker Eddy.  Our church structure, as well as our gatherings, are in sync with Eddy’s church manual for The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston. We aspire to demonstrate the spiritual essence of church that Eddy defined as:

“CHURCH. The structure of Truth and Love; what‐
ever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.

The Church is that institution, which affords proof of
its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the
dormant understanding from material beliefs to the ap‐
prehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of
divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and
healing the sick.”

OUR NAME: Technically we’re The Christian Science Society in Jamaica Plain, MA.  A branch of The Mother Church in Boston.  Affectionately we refer to our group as JPChurch, hence the website url.
