Tomorrow, our sermon will be devoted to simply this: God.
What does this word mean to you?
To be sure, the world has about as many varying definitions of God as there were snowflakes falling on Jamaica Plain this week. And for plenty of people, the word has negative connotations, or is associated with a bad history. “God” might feel vague and insubstantial, inscrutable, or unrealistic.
In beautiful fashion, the sermon this week responds to these ideas, and gives us something to sink our teeth into.
We’ll hear the idea that God is a purely spiritual entity, something that can’t be located by scrutinizing the physical universe. We’ll hear about God as unadulterated, healthful good itself. We’ll hear that this good God is the thing that made us, that shapes our lives, the driving force behind all health and happiness.
And, in one of my favorite phrases from this week’s sermon, we’ll hear it laid out like this:
The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death.
-from p. 140 of Mary Baker Eddy’s seminal work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
Come by 687 Centre St, Jamaica Plain. Others of us will be there, and all listening & learning together.
Or call in to listen to the service. (605-475-4000 x. 636128)
